If you enjoy watching professional sports, you are in luck. Denver plays host to several professional sports programs, making it a great place to live and work for people who love seeing a game in-person. Here are some of the great sports teams you will likely want to see play in-person.
The Denver Broncos are among the most recognized names in the NFL. They have been around since the American Football League (AFL) was founded in 1960. The Broncos have the unique distinction of having won the first game in AFL history with a 13-10 win over the Patriots on September 9, 1960.
While the Broncos had a rough start, not winning a lot of games in their early years, since the mid-1970s, the team has done pretty well overall. The Broncos have appeared in the Super Bowl eight times, winning it three times, most recently in 2016. Whether you love watching the Denver Broncos win, or you have another favorite NFL team, Mile High Stadium is a great place to watch a football game.
Baseball is said to be America’s pastime, and Denver does not disappoint those who enjoy this pastime. The Colorado Rockies are one of the newer teams in the MLB, having only been around since 1993. Their 2017 season is over, and their first home game for 2018 is not until April 6, but that does not mean you have to wait until April to show your support for the Rockies. 2018 season tickets can be purchased online now.
If you have ever wanted a tour of Coors Field, where the Rockies play, tours are available even during the off-season. During the off-season, tours are at noon and 2 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Because of the limited number of tickets available for each tour, guests are encouraged to purchase their tickets early. The tour typically lasts 70-80 minutes. If you have small children, you can also schedule a private tour, which will last about 45-60 minutes.
If you love basketball, be sure to catch a Denver Nuggets game played at the Pepsi Center. Although not the most recognizable team in the NBA, the Nuggets have had several winning seasons. They have gotten the 2017-2018 season off to a good start. Even though they had three road games in the first week, the Nuggets won all three games, the first two by six points and the third game by 21 points. With the NBA season lasting into April, there are still plenty of opportunities to see the Nuggets play at home this season.
Among other great sports teams in Denver is The Colorado Avalanche, an NHL team, who also play their home games at the Pepsi Center. During their time in Denver, the Avalanche have had some ups and downs. During the 1995-1996 season, the first season the Avalanche played in Denver, they won the Stanley Cup. They continued to have success over the next few years, but they have had a few rough years lately. Fortunately, the Avalanche played well in the 2017-2018 preseason, winning four of their six games, giving fans of the team hope.
While soccer does not have the same following as some other sports in the United States, the Colorado Rapids are worth mentioning as a great sports team in the Denver area. The Rapids play in Commerce City at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, which for some Denver residents, particularly those living in Stapleton, is closer than many of the arenas where some of the other professional teams in the area play. The Rapids’ goalkeeper, Tim Howard, was chosen in early October to be one of the 26 players called up to be on the national team as they played qualifier games for next year’s World Cup.
These are a few of the great sports teams in our area. If you like lacrosse, the Colorado Mammoths, who also play at the Pepsi Center, are an indoor lacrosse team. Because they play inside, their games are played during the winter and spring. Denver also has a field lacrosse team, the Denver Outlaws. For fans of rugby, Denver also has the Denver Barbarians. Of course, there are also several colleges and universities in the area, including the University of Denver, so if you enjoy college sports, you can also enjoy some more great sports teams in Denver.
