Sunday Jazz at City Park
What better way to close a summer weekend than a relaxing evening of jazz at City Park. The 10-concert City Park Jazz series takes place at the City Park Esplanade (1600 City Park Esplanade) every Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. from June 2 through August 4, 2019. Further, the season’s offerings include the big band sound of swing band Joe Smith and the Spicy Pickles (June 9); vocalist Hazel Miller (June 16);contemporary jazz by Dotsero (June 23);Buckner Funkenjazz (June30); guitar, trumpet and drum trio Invisible Bird (July 7); and salsa from Conjunto Colores (July 14). Don’t miss the New Orleans-style Brass Band Extravaganza on July 21, followed by Denver Jazz Hall of Famer Freddy Rodriguez and the Jazz Connection (July 28) and the Heavy Heavies featuring Venus Cruz (August 4).
Explore the Botanic Gardens
Summer offers the perfect opportunity to discover the natural beauty at the Denver Botanic Gardens (1007 York St.). Take advantage of Denver Botanic Gardens Free Days (Tuesday, June 4; Wednesday, July 10 and Tuesday, September 3, 2019) when general admission is free. Be sure to explore the Gardens of the West, 24 acres of native Colorado plants, as well as the gorgeous internationally-inspired tropical and Asian gardens and the vast aquatic plant collection in the Monet Water Garden.
Summer Flicks
On Friday evenings this summer, grab a blanket and head out to Founders Green at Stapleton (29th Ave. and Rosslyn St.) to enjoy free Movies on the Green. Showtime begins at dusk; plan to arrive early, as seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Concession stands each week benefit a local nonprofit group. Fun flicks featured this season: June 14, Black Panther; June 28, A League of Their Own; July 12, Spiderman into the Spiderverse; July 26, Crazy Rich Asians;and August 9, Incredibles 2.
Farmers Market Fun
Denverites can indulge in bountiful produce and artisan goodies at a multitude of summer farmers markets throughout the city. Indeed, you’ll find an abundance of flowers, fruits and veggies, plenty of tasty fare, lively music, and a fun and festive atmosphere. Further, here is just a sampling of locales:
- Denver’s largest farmers market is the Cherry Creek Fresh Market. This huge and varied market takes place on Saturdays from May 4 to October 26, 2019 and on Wednesdays from June 12 to September 26, 2019 at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center (1st Ave. and University Blvd.).
- Visit the Union Station Farmers Market (1701 Wynkoop St.) on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., May 11 through October 26, 2019. The market features fresh local produce, cooking demos and live music. Vendors offer everything from bagels to tamales, microgreens, fresh eggs, baked goods and flowers.
- The RiNo Farmers Market in the River North Arts District begins on June 2, 2019 at the EXDO Events Center (1399 35th St.) The market will feature family-owned Miller Farms and will include local arts and crafts, food trucks and live music.
